EP categories

The three Employment Pass categories

Your category depends mainly on your basic monthly salary and contract length. It decides how long your pass lasts and what your family can apply for.

Category I

Senior roles in the highest salary band, with the longest pass validity.

Category II

Mid-level professional roles in the middle salary band.

Category III

Skilled roles in the lowest salary band, with the shortest pass validity.

The salary thresholds for each category were raised from June 2026, and some categories may need the role advertised locally first. Ask us to confirm the current figures and rules for your role before you agree a salary.

FAQ

Employment pass: frequently asked questions

Who processes employment pass applications in Malaysia?
Applications are submitted online to the Expatriate Services Division (ESD). The sponsoring company must first register and be verified on the ESD portal.
How long does an employment pass application take?
Company registration with ESD usually takes about 14 working days to verify. Once the company is registered and the application is complete, a decision can come fairly quickly, but advertising requirements and queries can add time.
What is the minimum paid-up capital to sponsor an EP?
Generally RM250,000 for a fully Malaysian-owned company, RM350,000 for a joint venture with at least 30% foreign equity and RM500,000 for a fully foreign-owned company. Some sectors have higher requirements.
Why use an employment pass agency Kuala Lumpur based instead of applying yourself?
Most problems come from the company side, such as an unverified ESD account or missing licences. A local agency that also handles company secretarial work can sort these out before the application, which helps avoid delays.
Can my family join me on an employment pass?
Eligible Employment Pass holders can apply for passes for family members. What's available depends on your EP category, and we can apply for them together with your pass.
Do I need to be in Malaysia to apply?
No. The application is submitted by the employer online. Once approved, the applicant enters Malaysia, using a visa letter if their nationality needs one, and then has the pass endorsed in their passport.
