The basics

How family passes work in Malaysia

When you hold an Employment Pass, your close family can live with you in Malaysia on a pass linked to yours. Your employer applies for these passes through its ESD account, and they stay valid for as long as your own pass does.

From 1 June 2026, holders in all three Employment Pass categories can apply for family passes. Before that, most Category III holders could not.

Life in Malaysia

Working, studying and renewing

Can my spouse work?

A Dependent Pass doesn't give automatic work rights. Depending on your EP category, your spouse may apply for permission to work or get their own Employment Pass.

Can my children go to school?

Yes. Children on a Dependent Pass can attend international and private schools in Malaysia.

What about renewals?

Family passes follow your Employment Pass, so they're renewed together. If your pass ends, theirs ends too.
